FROM NOW ON

An attempt to keep up
Janet Cardiff / George Bures Miller / Road Trip / 2004

A poignant piece with the capacity to resonate with all who come into contact with it.
The artists discovered a box of slides containing the documentation of a trip across Canada to New York. The slides were captured by Miller’s grandfather who made the trip in order to meet with a doctor concerning the cancer he was dying from. The images are projected and one is able to hear the conversation between the artists as they speculate upon what is happening; the order of the slides and the reasons for their existence.
Miller never met his grandfather.

Simon Edmondson
There is so much tension and presence in Edmondson’s work. The implication of a being, misty and undefined yet shrouded  in stale light.

Alice Neel
A portrait artist who distills a playful yet often sinister feeling within the viewer. The fluidity of the paint, bold colour and the line work make for strong images.

Gerhard Richter
A loose yet incredibly photographic oil painting of his own family.
‘Since there is no such thing as absolute rightness and truth, we always pursue the artificial, leading, human truth. We judge and make a truth that excludes other truths. Art plays a formative part in this manufacture of truth.’ Richter 1962.

      Luc Tuymans
An artist described as being able to capture the banality of evil. His paintings are pleasing to look at but behold connotations of horrific historical events.

      MICHAËL BORREMANS
It seems appropriate to use this painting by Borremans as my first post here. An artist with whom I have an unceasing care for. From the delicacy of the paint marks to the unusual compositions; he manages to distill an unnerving, ambiguous and nostalgic feeling in the viewer.
